Human Communication Sciences and Devices MissionHEI’s Department of Human Communication Sciences and Devices is committed to developing new knowledge of hearing and speech communication processes, and to apply this knowledge to the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with communication disorders caused by hearing impairment.
Focus Our research is focused primarily on the peripheral mechanisms of hearing that code speech and other complex acoustic signals. We seek to understand the properties of signals that convey perceptual information and the properties of hearing impairment that affect the function of these peripheral mechanisms. We intend to use the knowledge gained from this research to further the development of algorithms, designs, and methods of assessment and evaluation of prosthetic devices that can substitute or enhance the function of impaired peripheral mechanisms in hearing impaired individuals.
