Fred H. Linthicum, Jr., M.D.
Head, Department of Histopathology
Director, Temporal Bone and Histopathology Lab

Fred H. Linthicum, Jr., M.D., has been with the “House” organizations since 1958, when he joined the Otologic Medical Group (now House Clinic) as an associate physician. His clinical practice focused primarily on the hearing health issues of pediatric patients. Concurrent with his medical practice, Dr. Linthicum ran the electro-nystagmography section of the House Clinic, which helped develop a machine based on rotary nystagmus, or eye movement. This technology, which diagnoses vestibular (balance) disorders or anomalies through detection of abnormal eye movements, has become the global standard for vestibular testing.

During his 26 years at the Clinic, Dr. Linthicum developed a special interest in histopathology research and volunteered his time in the House Ear Institute’s Temporal Bone Histopathology Lab. When he retired from medical practice in 1984, he became Director of the Institute’s Temporal Bone and Histopathology Lab. The goal of Dr. Linthicum’s lab is to investigate and understand the underlying causes of disorders in the hearing and balance systems through study of the human temporal bone. The Institute’s temporal bone collection is unique in that a complete clinical history and diagnosis accompanies the nearly 800 pairs of temporal bones that have been donated to the lab for research. Dr. Linthicum and his research team use this information as they examine the ear system contained within each donated bone to study the pathologies and effects of ear surgery or other treatments that donors received during their lifetime. Current projects include molecular diagnosis of ear diseases, cochlear otosclerosis, cochlear implants and balance disturbances, and the aging ear.

Dr. Linthicum is a clinical professor of otolaryngology at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine. He has published numerous articles in publications including Layrngoscope, Otology & Neurotology and the American Journal of Otology. He is a member of several professional organizations and recipient of numerous awards including the American Otological Society’s Award of Merit (1994), and elected membership in the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars (2003). A native of California, he attended Los Angeles High and Pomona College. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California, School of Medicine, and completed residencies (in Otolaryngology) at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Maryland, and Kantonsspital, Zurich, Switzerland, after serving as a Captain in the U.S. Medical Corps, U.S. Army.
