Caroline Abdala, Ph.D., is a scientist, licensed audiologist and co-department head of the Children’s Auditory Research and Evaluation (CARE) Center at the House Ear Institute (HEI). She joined the Institute as a research scientist in 1995, after completing her postdoctoral fellowship in the CARE Center that same year. Dr. Abdala’s research projects at HEI focus mainly on the maturation of cochlear (inner ear) function in human infants, with the eventual goal of improving diagnosis and intervention for children with hearing loss.
Dr. Abdala has received funding from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institutes of Health (NIDCD-NIH), the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, American Academy of Audiology and the National Organization for Hearing Research to conduct the following research projects: Development of Human Cochlear Function, Postnatal Cochlear Maturation and Sources of Immaturity and Impaired Cochlear Tuning in Pediatric Patients with Hearing Loss.
Dr. Abdala is a member of several professional associations, and a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. She has also been a reviewer for several hearing science publications and is currently an assistant editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Audiology. Her articles have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Hearing Research and Ear and Hearing. Additionally, Dr. Abdala has authored or co-authored several book chapters and is a frequent presenter at professional meetings. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, and a part-time lecturer in the Communicative Disorders Department at California State University, Northridge. She received her doctoral degree in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Washington, Seattle.
