About FM System

FM systems (frequency modulation system) can make a big difference to how well children are able to hear and understand in noisy environments

An FM system consists of a transmitter and microphone worn by the teacher, and a receiver used by the child.

Sound field systems use receivers can be speakers mounted on classroom walls or a small speaker placed on the child’s desk

Personal FM receivers are small die-sized devices that attach to the child’s hearing aids or cochlear implant processors

How does a FM system work?
FM allows the child to hear the teacher’s voice as though it were close to his ears at all times, in spite of noise, the teacher’s position in the classroom, or lack of facial visibility

Do they have to be used in a classroom setting?
FM systems can be useful in extracurricular activities as well, such as sports and social/service activities, and in the home during large gatherings and long car rides.

What does a FM system look like
There are several companies that manufacture frequency modulation systems. The video below is a demonstration of a typical FM system. The House Research Institute does not endorse this particular product. The video is only for demonstration purposes.
