Post-doctoral Position, Cancer Genetics of Neural Tumors

A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the newly established Center for
Neural Tumor Research at the House Ear Institute (see below). The project will focus
on the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets of neurofibromatosis type 2
(NF2) using mouse model systems. NF2 is a familial cancer syndrome caused by
mutations of the NF2 tumor suppressor gene and it is characterized by the
development of multiple tumors of the nervous system, mainly schwannomas (for
review see: McClatchey and Giovannini, Genes & Development, 2005). One of our
goals is to answer the long-standing question as to whether these tumors arise from
neural crest stem cells or differentiated glia in order to obtain better models to study
schwannoma formation and test targeted therapies.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and energetic team seeking to unravel
the schwannoma cell of origin through investigating NF2 loss in vivo during
development. Candidates should have a Ph.D and/or M.D. and be well-versed in
molecular genetic and cell biological techniques. Experience in mouse models of
cancer, histopathology, and developmental biology is preferred but not essential. The
ideal candidate should demonstrate a passion for science, innovative thinking and the
ability to work independently and efficiently. Strong verbal and written
communication skills are required.

The House Ear Institute, one of the world’s leading centers for research in the auditory
system, places a heavy emphasis on translational research. Amenities include a new
laboratory building dedicated to research in major diseases that affect hearing,
including NF2. The Division of Cell Biology and Genetics at HEI has established an
infrastructure to facilitate interdisciplinary research, including core labs in molecular
biology, proteomics, genetic analysis, animal imaging, histology, electron microscopy,
optical imaging, and image computing.

A highly-competitive salary and benefits package is included, commensurate with
experience. Interested applicants should send a brief description of their research
interests and career goals, as well as a curriculum vitae that includes contact
information for three professional references to:
